Ask Doug: Piper/Warren and the Coming of the Antichrist

In this second segment on the controversy surrounding John Piper’s invitation to Rick Warren to speak at the 2010 Desiring God Conference, Pastor Wilson details what he believes is one of the fundamental mistakes “separatists”  make in evaluating situations like this.

  1. thanks doug. you’re right (of course!) with the “cultural/theological pessimism” of many reformed camp
purists…always hunting someone “less-right” (or less-wrong?) about….so they can publically ridicule
someone God just might be using more than them. it’s shameful and mocks Christ’s command to
“suffer-long” and (dare we say it) love the brethren. there IS more substance to warren than most realize
(perhaps they’ve been too proud to read his book) and i commend piper for befriending him. it’ll likely be
good for them both. singing “you’re sins aren’t my sins, and my sins, aren’t his sins” is wearysome &
childish, because eveybody knows, “the more we get together, the happier we’ll be!” :-)

    Hey Doug,

Since when are Christians optimistic? Love it! Spread the optimism please! I have actually found this situation extremely disheartening. I think Piper showed us an ugly side to the “young, restless, and reformed” movement (of which I am), and that is pride. I have felt it, and struggle with it myself. God blesses you with deeper knowledge, and the next moment you are smarter than others, and you let them know it. An understanding of God’s sovereignty is a gift, and not something to be wagged in others faces. I think there is an unhealthy “we have figured it all out” sentiment in this movement, and I hope Piper continues to keep us in check. If there is one thing that will kill the new Reformed movement, it is Pride.

Bravo Pastor Wilson – well said.
p.s. i have been following Rick Warren on FB and he has some pretty profound things to say, the man obviously loves Jesus.

    1. I am friends with the Warrens and while I disagree with Rick on many things, there is no end to the frustration I have with people who seem to get on his case because it is apparently the cool thing to do. That is, when I hear some of the things said against Rick that I know for a fact are false, it is very frustrating. There is plenty to say against the whole Purpose Driven/Saddleback/Warren thing, but too many people either attack him unfairly, ignorantly, or unkindly and it is too bad.

    2. I agree that there are some problems with the young calvinists today and it is a problem. That said, they are still young, and many of us know that often there is nothing more terrifying than a new or young calvinist! It takes time to come to terms with a Reformed faith that is extremely deep and complex at times. Hopefully as the movement matures, so to will the adherents and we will, Lord willing, see great blessing from it.
